Job Description :

General Accountabilities/Objectives:

The Accountant, under the direction of the Controller, is responsible for the planning, assigning, tracking, and oversight of day-to-day accounting functions to make the business run as efficiently as possible.  Real estate development duties and annual audit and tax work are detailed below.  This position manages the Bookkeeper and the Full Charge Bookkeeper.


The nature of this position requires contact with Owners, CFO, Controller, Full Charge Bookkeeper, Bookkeeper, Management Company, HR Department, Construction & Architect Companies, Banking, Public Accountants, and Lender contacts.


  • Sort and distribute mail daily

  • Maintain timesheets for three employees

  • Plan, assign, and direct workload of two managed employees daily

  • Guide and work with staff for related companies by coordinating activities and answering questions

  • Review journal entries, bank statement reconciliations, check runs, and banking transactions

  • Complete monthly construction draws for three properties

  • Maintain tenant A/R activity for 1705 E Franklin LLC and coordinate with property manager to ensure that residents are getting charged correctly

  • Process past tenant security deposit refunds

  • Reconcile monthly investment statements for three entities

  • Hand out and track staff parking passes for all related companies

  • Review bi-annual financials for approximately 15 entities

  • Review annual 1098s and 1099s

  • Review annual tax planning work papers and send to accountants

  • Review annual audit (2) and tax packages (68) and send to accountants

  • Complete initial review of draft audits (2) and returns (68)

  • Track receipt, review, and filing of all annual audits and tax returns for 93 entities

  • Send and track annual investor and lender reporting and K-1s, as necessary

  • Review scanning and electronic filing of audits, tax returns, AJEs, and accountant trial balances for 93 entities

  • Complete annual real estate schedule and contingent liabilities list for two principals

  • Complete annual ownership percentage spreadsheet to be used by CFO to prepare principals’ personal financial statements

  • Complete semiannual performance reviews for two managed employees

  • Develop and maintain accounting procedures as needed

  • Compile workpapers for cost certifications done by outside accountants and review

  • Post property purchases, sales, and loan closings

  • Reconcile financial discrepancies by collecting and analyzing account information

  • Summarize current financial status by collecting info and preparing necessary reports

  • Recommend financial actions by analyzing accounting options

  • Be prepared to provide answers and back-up data for all areas of day-to-day accounting

  • Work with Controller and CFO to assist on projects as needed

  • Maintain professional communications, both written and verbal, at all times

  • Complete all tasks in specific time periods as assigned
